Overview
Automated warm-up allows SendGrid to automatically warmup your dedicated IP by throttling the number of emails that are sent through that IP. The essential objective of the IP warm-up is to gradually increase your sending volume to anticipated "normal" levels. The gradual approach allows ISPs to become acquainted with your typical sending patterns, aiding in the identification of any irregularities. While the automated warm-up process does provide the convenience of not having to monitor and manage sending with a particular IP, there some limitations in it's use that may cause more harm than good to your IP's sending reputation.
What You Need To Know
Before considering using automated IP warm-up, ensure you have at least 1 dedicated IP that has already gone through the warm-up process and is being actively used within your SendGrid account. This is a crucial step, as automated IP warm-up will throttle how many emails can be sent through the warming IP and if there are no other available dedicated IPs on your account to send through, email will be retried and expire after 72 hours.
When using automated IP warm-up you want to ensure you have a somewhat controlled group of recipients that you know will actively engage with your emails. We recommend working with an internal/personal list of recipients first and foremost. This way you have full insight into the performance of the email as well and can take action when some emails land in SPAM folders, as to be expected when building a sending reputation for a new IP. If you do not have an internal list the next recommendation would be to use your most recent signups as those recipients tend to be most active right after they sign up for an email list, which will encourage engagement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enable automated warm-up?
Automated warm-up can be enabled by going to settings > ip addresses, selecting edit on the IP you would like to warm-up and check the box "Use Automated IP warmup".
When should automated warm-up not be used?
Automated IP warm-up is a powerful tool offered by SendGrid to streamline the process of establishing a positive reputation for your dedicated IP address. However, it's essential to recognize scenarios where automated warm-up might not be the best option for your email sending needs. Here are some situations in which it's advisable, to avoid using automated warm-up:
| Low Recipient Engagement | If you anticipate low engagement rates with your email recipients, automated warm-up may not yield the desired results. Low engagement can negatively impact your IP reputation, as ISPs interpret low interaction rates as potential indicators of spammy or unwanted content. In such cases, a more hands-on approach to warm-up, where you can closely monitor and adjust your sending strategies based on recipient behavior, may be more effective. |
| High Volume Sends | Automated warm-up is designed to gradually increase sending volume over time. However, if you need to send a large volume of emails immediately, such as for a time-sensitive campaign or promotion, the throttling imposed by automated warm-up could hinder your efforts. In these instances, manual warm-up, where you have more control over the pace of sending, may be more suitable. |
| Varied Sending Patterns | If your sending patterns are highly variable or unpredictable, automated warm-up may not adapt well to your needs. For example, if you frequently send emails sporadically or in bursts, the gradual ramp-up enforced by automated warm-up may not align with your sending habits. In such cases, a more flexible warm-up approach that allows for rapid adjustments may be preferable. |
| Specific Target Audiences | Automated warm-up relies on sending emails to a controlled group of recipients to gauge engagement and establish reputation. If your target audience is highly niche or specialized, it may be challenging to find a suitable group for automated warm-up purposes. In these situations, manual warm-up, where you can tailor your recipient list more precisely, may offer better results. |
| Customized Sending Strategies | Automated warm-up follows a predefined schedule for increasing sending volume. If you require a more customized approach, such as targeting different segments of your audience with specific messaging or timing, automated warm-up may not provide the necessary flexibility. Manual warm-up allows you to adjust your sending strategies on the fly to better meet your campaign objectives. |
By carefully evaluating your specific sending requirements and considering factors such as recipient engagement, sending volume, and sending patterns, you can determine whether automated warm-up is the right choice for your email delivery needs. If automated warm-up is not suitable, alternative warm-up methods, such as manual warm-up or hybrid approaches combining automation and manual intervention, can be explored to ensure optimal deliverability and reputation management for your dedicated IP addresses.
